About the School

The School of Education is the administrative home for the teacher licensure and graduate programs in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services. More than 50 full-time faculty members have assignments in the School of Education. It is the largest of the four administrative divisions in the college.

The School of Education offers a wide range of program and degree options, including baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees. Teacher preparation programs in Early Childhood Education (pre-kindergarten through grade three), Middle Childhood Education (grades four through nine), Secondary Education (grades 7 through 12) and Special Education (kindergarten through grade 12) enable successful graduates to enter the teaching profession with appropriate State of Ohio licenses. A birth-to-five non-license program prepares successful graduates to work in Head Start, preschool and child care programs, and family child care programs. Graduate degree programs at the masters and doctoral level enable professional educators to broaden and refine their knowledge and competencies in both general and specific areas, such as curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, educational studies, literacy, special education, and urban educational leadership. Endorsement programs permit licensed teachers to add to their qualifications in reading, teaching English as a second language, special education and other areas.

Offerings in the School of Education feature small classes taught by talented, experienced, and involved faculty at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Teacher licensure programs, some of which may be taken on the Uptown or Clermont College campuses, provide extensive field-clinical experiences with experienced teacher mentors in area suburban and urban schools. Program graduates consistently achieve high scores with on state-mandated licensure assessments, both written (Praxis II) and performance-based (Praxis III). All programs in the School of Education meet rigorous accreditation standards of the State of Ohio and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
